No. California does not give buyers a general right to cancel a vehicle purchase contract after signing, so once you sign and drive off the lot you're generally locked in. A separate, optional contract cancellation option agreement exists for some used vehicles under a set price, but it must be purchased at the time of sale and isn't automatic.
You never have to use a broker; you can lease directly from a dealer's own inventory. If someone does act as a broker, arranging a lease or purchase on your behalf for a fee, they're required to hold a separate occupational license from the DMV, distinct from a dealer's license.
With a lease, tax is generally charged on each monthly payment as it comes due rather than on the full vehicle price upfront, which spreads the tax cost out over the lease term instead of front-loading it. This differs from a purchase, where tax is typically due on the full negotiated price at the time of sale.
The leasing company stays on record as the registered or legal owner of the vehicle for the life of the lease, even though you're the one driving and insuring it. Renewal and registration correspondence is tied to that ownership record, which is why address or plate issues sometimes have to be routed through the leasing company rather than handled by the driver alone.
Mileage caps and excess-wear charges are set by the lease contract itself rather than by state law, so there's no fixed statewide limit, but standard lease terms commonly run 24 to 39 months with an annual allowance in that range. Going over the contracted mileage or returning the car with excess wear typically triggers per-mile or repair charges spelled out in the agreement, so it's worth checking those terms before signing rather than after.
